Live jazz, artists, venues and education in Leicester
Seb is a Saxophonist, Bandleader and Composer Half French, half British, and often travelling, Séb grew up seeing the world from the perspective of two ifferent cultures. He first blew an alto when it was bigger than he was (he was seven at the time), studied piano, guitar and drums as a child, then the saxophone with London teacher James Knight, who introduced him to jazz music and inspired him to create his own individual sound and musical approach. Julian Argüelles and Jean Toussaint were among his high-profile teachers at Trinity College of Music, London, where he graduated in 2005 with 1st Class Honours, the Silver Medal award and was also awarded the Services to Jazz prize. Seb also spent crucial periods with American pioneer Steve Coleman and his Five Elements band at workshops in France in 2001, 2007 and more recently an exclusive masterclass with his own group Life Experience and Coleman’s Reflex trio, with pianist Dave Virelles and drummer Marcus Gilmore during the London Jazz Festival 2011. Séb worked with Portuguese group Pequenos Mundos in 2004 and again in 2006 when they played Portugal’s Estremoz Jazz Festival. Later that year, Pipe formed Life Experience. The group played at the London Jazz Festival along side Tony Kofi, and went on to win a £1500 development prize from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, which set its recording career in motion. Séb tours extensively with his own core group Life Experience (with pianist Arthur Lea, guitarist Rich Gold, bassist Kevin Glasgow, drummer George Hart. See the Life Experience biography for all the info! He also performs much session work around the U.K, is a member of the Jon Bird Big Band and is a highly sought teacher of drums and saxophone. Moreover, he enjoys collaborating with a wide variety of musicians and groups from the U.K., France, Italy, Portugal and Japan. Most high profile performances have taken place at London Jazz Festival, Estremoz Jazz Festival in Portugal, Oxford Jazz Festival, Ealing Jazz Festival and Opera City, Tokyo, Japan. Séb featured in Jazzwise magazine (Issue 131, June 2009) when he was interviewed by Selwyn Harris in the Taking Off section. “The sounds of great alto saxophonists like Ornette Coleman, Charlie Parker, Steve Coleman and Lee Konitz are sometimes suggested in Pipe’s serpentine lines and persuasive use of tonality and space. The leader's serpentine melodic fluency, improv resourcefulness and controlled freedom with pitch all confirm that the early accolades he has received were well deserved..†John Fordham, Guardian
