Joel Barford

Joel is a 19 year old full-time professional jazz drummer/session musician. Joel has been performing since the age of 10 with various big bands through the Northampton Music and Performing Arts Trust. At the age of 16 Joel became a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra Academy Big Band (NYJO 2) and was their drummer for 2 years. In 2015 Joel joined an up-and-coming new roots/country pop band called the CC SMUGGLERS. During that time Joel toured the UK 4 times and recorded their singles and albums. Also in the summer of 2016 Joel went on his first European tour with CC playing some of Europe’s iconic venues and biggest festivals. Including North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Colours of Ostrava (Czech Republic), Bospop Weert (Netherlands) Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival (UK), Indiependence Music & Arts Festival (Cork, Ireland), Latitude Festival (UK), Ladná Čeladná (Czech Republic), Rock Werchter and TW Classic in Belgium where they opened for Lionel Richie and Bruce Springsteen to 65,000 people. Over the past couple of years Joel has made many TV Appearances in UK and abroad and has been played on National radio in many countries across Europe and the UK (BBC Radio 2). Joel plays with many groups, projects and singer songwriters from Jazz to Pop and is currently making a living from performing and teaching. Joel has been lucky enough to play along side some great, well respected musicians such as Liane Carroll, Greg Coulson, Beau Holland, Rachael Johnson, CC Smugglers, Jaqui Dankworth, John Etheridge, Tom Seals and Roger Inniss. His inspirations cover a wide range of drummers such as Bill Stewart, Jorge Rossy, Mark Guiliana, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Eric Harland, Steve Gadd, Ash Soan, Benny Greb, Ralph Salmins, Buddy Rich, Ari Hoenig, John Riley, Jeff Ballard, Nate Smith, Brian Blade, Sunny Payne, Mel Lewis, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Joe Morello, Art Blakey, Nate Wood, Sebastiaan De Krom, Peter Erskine and Steve Jordan.
